     Cleansing of the brain from "zombie cells" could become a new treatment for dementia

    Researchers have identified a new target in the fight against dementia (acquired dementia) and age-related cognitive decline – so-called zombie cells.

    Researchers from the Mayo clinic, USA, has identified a new target in the fight against dementia (acquired dementia) and age-related cognitive decline – so-called zombie cells (more formally they are called aging). According to scientists, the elimination of these brain cells may become a new method for the prevention or treatment of Alzheimer's disease and other types of dementia.

    Recall that the aging of the body cells inside the body change. Biological mechanism called cellular senescence stops the division of "damaged" cells, preventing cancer and promoting healing of injuries.

    Despite the fact that the body is cleared of senescent cells with age, this mechanism becomes less effective, resulting in "aged" cells accumulate in various organs and tissues. Even if they are not already divided, their presence affects the neighboring cells: chronic inflammation associated with age-related diseases.

    Not the first scientists engaged in the study of cells, "retired". For example, experts examined how the accumulation of "zombie cells" affect the development of some age-related diseases.

    In earlier work, researchers from the Mayo clinic talked about the connection, designed to eliminate senescent cells from mice. As a result, experts have prolonged lifespan of rodents by 35% and improved their health without any visible side effects.

    Recent work has been devoted to the study of the role of senescent cells in the progression of neurodegenerative diseases. The team experimented with two different methods of scrubbing the senescent cells from mice.

    In one case, specialists working with genetically modified rodents designed to mimic the pathology of Alzheimer's disease due to the production of tangles of Tau proteins in neurons. As a result, the rodents lost the ability to learn and remember new information.

    On some mice, experts have experienced a genetic trick – the "kill switch" that destroys the cells as soon as they begin to age. From mutated animals with this switch of Tau-protein was not accumulated so quickly. Moreover, these mice are better able to recognize new smells and objects than mice with a large number of senescent cells in the brain.

    "After the removal of aging cells, scientists have discovered that sick animals retained the ability to form memories, eliminated signs of inflammation, did not develop neurofibrillary tangles and support normal weight of the brain," — said in a press release, first author of the study Bassian Tyler (Tyler Bussian).

    In another experiment on mice, scientists found that an experimental anticancer drug called revitalex acts as an effective centricitee agent. He removes senescent cells from the brain of rodents.

    The results of the study on mice showed that senescent cells contribute to neurodegeneration. The elimination of "zombie cells" prevents damage, potentially opening a new line of attack against Alzheimer's and other forms of dementia.

    In addition, experts found out which cells turn into "zombies". They were of microglia and astrocytes.

    While scientists can't tell you the reason why senescent cells cause such problems. In earlier works it was assumed that they secrete inflammatory chemicals and cause other nearby cells to fall into programssee condition.

    Detailed results of the survey can be found in an article published in Nature.

    By the way, earlier researchers found that the removal of the brain from "zombie cells" will also help to prevent Parkinson's.
