     New nanofilter expedite the clearance of the water a hundred times

    Australian scientists have created a cheap and simple technology of water purification from heavy metals, oil and other contaminants. Speed filter design is superior to existing analogs in a hundred times, the researchers said.

    Water is the source of life. Scientists strive to make it as clean as possible. They create filters that remove the water of microplastics, radioactive elements and heavy metals, as well as turn salt water into fresh.

    However, the pollution problem continues to concern environmentalists. Today, according to statistics, every ninth person in the world has access to clean water. This is mainly residents of third world countries, which are not available innovative technologies.

    So Australian scientists from RMIT University and the University of New South Wales decided to create a new filtering technology, which is inexpensive and fairly simple, and will accelerate the cleaning process.

    "Heavy metal contamination causes serious health problems, particularly vulnerable children. New nanofilter can be a cheap and ultra-fast solution of the problem," says study co-author savable of Ali (Ali Zavabeti).

    As the filter material his team used the nanostructures that form naturally in smelting metals.

    Researchers have created an alloy by combining liquid metals on the basis of gallium with aluminum. Such a process can be carried out at room temperature: gallium melts at 30 degrees Celsius.

    When the alloy is exposed to water, its surface formed of the finest – a hundred thousand times thinner than a human hair – leaves aluminum oxide.

    Then they are placed in a rough form so that they become porous. Such property and allows you to filter water: the liquid quickly seeps through the pores and the aluminium oxide, meanwhile, holds contaminants.

    "The filter removes lead and oil out of the water, but we also know that he can aim at the other common contaminants. Previous studies have shown that our materials are effective for the absorption of substances such as mercury, sulfates and phosphates," — said Savable.

    According to him, checking nanofilter showed that it effectively cleans the water in which the pollution levels are 13 times higher than safe performance. But speed cleaning is a new technology superior to existing in an incredible a hundred times, experts say.

    It is also noted that the same "batch" of alloy can be used repeatedly to create new nanostructures.

    It is noteworthy that the method, developed by scientists, can be used to "grow" not only ultra-thin sheets, but also of nanofibers. And the process of melting metal, designed by researchers has potential applications in various industries.

    "The creation of these materials has traditionally been energy intensive, requires high temperatures, long processing and use of toxic metals. Chemistry of liquid metal allows you to avoid all these problems, so this is a great alternative," adds the head of the research group Professor kourosh Kalantar-zadeh (Kourosh Kalantar-zadeh).
